Concerts - Nanuchka

NaNuchKa plays a brand of music that blends jazz, gypsy music, and rock together to create a unique style of their own.

One part storytelling,
one part virtuous musicianship,
two parts unique melody and sound,
and three parts vodka
.

Roy Gurel's guitar certainly includes the box of riffs and tricks you'd expect from any great guitarist, but his style is unique and utterly persuasive, fluidly shifting from lead melodies whose origins span half a dozen cultures--to an unashamedly simple rhythm, modestly stepping back to let the vocals or piano come to the fore. Yula's singing takes a song, pins it down, then holds it up in front of you for you to see; her voice catches you and will not let go, and whether she's behind the piano or the bass, she pulls out sounds which capture the ear and grab you by the throat. Meanwhile, John Bollinger lays down a percussive wave which manages to be jazzy without jazz pretention, and to rock hard without sounding like any other rock drums. They are unique and unforgettable.
